The Havanese breed, as outlined by the Havanese Club of America (HCA), is defined by six critical elements that emphasize its unique structure, temperament, and charm. Below is a summary of these six elements:

1. Size, Proportion, and Substance

The ideal Havanese measures 8½ to 11½ inches in height. Puppies under 12 months of age are exempt from the minimum height requirement. A slightly longer body compared to height gives the breed a balanced yet elegant appearance. Dogs outside these size parameters are disqualified.

2. Topline

The Havanese’s topline rises slightly from the withers to the croup, giving the breed its distinctive silhouette. This slight rise remains consistent whether the dog is standing or moving, a hallmark of proper breed structure.

3. Gait

Known for its unique springy gait, the Havanese moves with light, spirited energy. This movement results from the short upper arm and strong rear drive. The breed’s gait reflects its playful personality and sound conformation.

4. Expression

The Havanese’s expression is soft, intelligent, and mischievous, featuring large, almond-shaped dark brown eyes. The slightly rounded skull, dropped ears set high on the head, and a rectangular muzzle complete the breed’s inviting and friendly look.

5. Coat

The Havanese boasts a long, abundant, and silky coat, which may be wavy or corded. The correct coat allows the dog’s natural structure to show while being soft and light to the touch. Any coarse, wiry, or short, smooth coat is a disqualification. All coat colors and patterns are permissible.

6. Temperament

The Havanese is playful, alert, and non-quarrelsome, with immense charm and intelligence. Their friendly demeanor and sweet disposition make them ideal companions. This temperament is a key defining trait of the breed.

The Havanese Club of America offers a wealth of resources and programs designed to support Havanese owners, enthusiasts, and breeders. From detailed health and training information to events like specialty shows and educational seminars, the club fosters a sense of community while promoting the well-being of this special breed. Membership provides access to a network of experienced Havanese owners and professionals, helping you deepen your understanding of the breed and connect with others who share your passion. Whether you’re a first-time owner or a longtime fan, joining the club is a great way to stay informed, engaged, and involved with the Havanese community.

Additional Notes on Disqualifications

Havanese dogs may be disqualified for:

  • Incomplete or absent pigmentation on the eye rims, nose, or lips.
  • Pigmentation in colors other than black or brown.
  • Coarse, wiry, or short, smooth coats.
  • Height outside the range of 8½ to 11½ inches (except for dogs under 12 months).

Summary

The six critical elements—size, topline, gait, expression, coat, and temperament—define the Havanese as a breed. Each characteristic contributes to its charm, functionality, and adaptability, ensuring that the breed remains a beloved companion. The HCA continues to guide these standards, ensuring the preservation of the breed’s distinctive traits.Credits
